Facing away from busy West 23rd Street, Suite 620 was the favorite New York City crash pad of Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, and his fortress of solitude between gigs.
In 2012, this historic residence was gutted. During the demolition process, disbelieving tenants of Hotel Chelsea salvaged relics from Suite 620. Today they're souvenirs of a great artistic mecca, and of iconic talents like Jerry Garcia who called The Chelsea home.
In the mid-70's Jerry Garcia eschewed the trappings of wealth, living the Bohemian lifestyle to its hilt by camping amid artists & fellow musicians at The Chelsea.
Jerry Garcia so admired the 'Beat' storyteller Herbert Huncke, resident of Suite 828, that after Huncke's literary star had faded, Garcia paid his rent at Hotel Chelsea.
